Ac service cost in India -honest guide : You search “AC service near me” on Google. UrbanCompany shows ₹499. The local technician says ₹600. The brand authorized service center quotes ₹1,200. A guy on JustDial says ₹399 with “free gas check.”
Same service, four different prices. What’s the difference? More importantly: which one do you actually need, and which scams should you avoid?

I’ll explain exactly what each service tier should include, the questions that separate honest technicians from upsell artists, and the red flags that mean you’re being cheated.
The four service tiers explained
There’s no industry-wide standard, but most reliable service providers offer four distinct tiers. The vocabulary varies — “basic clean,” “premium service,” “anti-rust treatment,” “chemical wash” — but the actual work falls into these categories:
Tier 1: Basic servicing (₹400–700) -Ac service cost in Indi
What it should include:
- Indoor unit filter cleaning (washing with water)
- Wiping the front cover and louvers
- Visual inspection of indoor and outdoor units
- Checking for visible refrigerant leaks
- Testing cooling output (temperature drop measurement)
- Cleaning drain pipe to ensure water flow
Time required: 30–45 minutes
This is suitable for: AC less than 2 years old, used in low-dust areas, with no current cooling issues. Annual frequency.
What it does NOT include: opening the indoor unit casing, cleaning evaporator coils, deep-cleaning the outdoor unit, refrigerant top-up.
Tier 2: Standard service with foam wash (₹700–1,000)
What it should include:
- Everything in Tier 1
- Removing the front cover of the indoor unit
- Foam-cleaning the evaporator coils (the part behind the filter that gets cold)
- Cleaning the blower fan
- Mild rinsing of outdoor unit coils with water
- Tightening of all visible electrical connections
Time required: 60–90 minutes
This is suitable for: AC 2–4 years old, in regular city conditions, used 4+ months a year. Annual frequency.
This is the service most Indian households actually need but rarely get.
Tier 3: Chemical wash / deep service (₹1,200–1,800)
What it should include:
- Everything in Tier 2
- Removing the indoor unit completely from the wall (jet pump cleaning)
- Pressure-washing the evaporator coils with a chemical cleaning agent
- Disassembling and cleaning the blower wheel
- Pressure-washing outdoor unit coils
- Anti-fungal treatment of drain tray
- Reinstallation with fresh insulation tape if needed
Time required: 2–3 hours
This is suitable for: AC 4+ years old, AC in dusty/polluted cities, AC showing reduced cooling, AC with bad smell when starting. Every 18–24 months.
A genuine chemical wash takes time. If a technician promises “chemical wash” and finishes in 45 minutes, you didn’t get a chemical wash.
Tier 4: Full overhaul with refrigerant top-up (₹2,500–4,500)
What it should include:
- Everything in Tier 3
- Recovery and reweighing of refrigerant
- Pressure testing for leaks
- Top-up to manufacturer-specified weight
- Replacement of damaged thermal insulation
- Testing of all sensors and PCB board
Time required: 3–5 hours
This is suitable for: Cooling problems that don’t resolve with standard service, AC older than 6 years that’s never had refrigerant attention, post-relocation reinstallation.
How to tell what you’re actually paying for
Before booking, ask the service provider these specific questions. Honest providers will answer clearly. Scam outfits will dodge.
“Will the technician open the indoor unit cover?” Tier 1 doesn’t require this. Tier 2 onwards must include it. If you’re paying for “premium service” but the technician only sprays the filter and leaves, you didn’t get what you paid for.
“Will the outdoor unit be cleaned with water, and from where?” Outdoor unit accessibility varies. Ground-floor units are easy. Third-floor units need ladder access. Some technicians skip outdoor cleaning entirely on higher floors. Confirm in advance.
“What’s the time estimate?” This is the single most useful question. A 30-minute service can’t be a chemical wash regardless of what the booking page claims. Time is the most honest indicator of what work is being done.
“Will you give me the AC service report after?” Brand authorized centers (LG, Daikin, Samsung) provide a written checklist of work done. If a service provider can’t give you a report, they’re not doing systematic work.
The 6 most common AC servicing scams
I’ve collected these from honest technicians and customer complaint forums. Watch for them.
Scam 1: “Your gas is low, ₹2,500 for top-up”
Refrigerant in a sealed AC system doesn’t reduce unless there’s a leak. If the technician claims “gas is low” without identifying a leak, they’re either lying or about to add gas to a system that will leak again in weeks.
What to ask: “Can you show me the leak first? Where is it?” A genuine refrigerant problem has a physical cause — a corroded joint, a damaged pipe, a faulty valve. If the technician can’t point to the leak, refuse the top-up.
Reality check: A 1.5-ton AC’s refrigerant should last 5–7 years minimum without top-up. Sometimes 10+ years. If a 2-year-old AC needs gas top-up, something is wrong — and adding more gas without fixing the leak just delays the problem.
Scam 2: “PCB is damaged, needs replacement, ₹4,500”
The PCB (Printed Circuit Board) is the AC’s main electronic controller. Genuine PCB failures do happen, but they’re often misdiagnosed.
What to ask: “What’s the specific symptom that indicates PCB failure? Can you test components individually?” Many “PCB failures” are actually capacitor failures (₹300 part) or sensor failures (₹500 part) that get bundled into a full PCB replacement quote.
Reality check: Insist on seeing the old PCB before the technician leaves. Insist on a warranty on the new one (3 months minimum). Get a second opinion if cost exceeds ₹3,000.
Scam 3: “Compressor is weak, needs replacement”
Compressor replacement is a ₹12,000–18,000 job and the most common upsell scam. Genuine compressor failure has clear symptoms: AC not cooling at all, loud humming with no air circulation, unit tripping the breaker repeatedly.
What to ask: “What’s the current draw of the compressor? What’s the rated current?” A weak compressor draws abnormally high current. A technician with a clamp meter can measure this in 30 seconds.
Reality check: A 5-year-old AC under warranty often has the compressor replaced free under brand warranty. Always check warranty status before paying out-of-pocket. Even out-of-warranty, get 2–3 quotes before approving compressor work.
Scam 4: “Free service” with hidden charges
The “free service” voucher attached to your new AC purchase is rarely actually free. Common add-ons:
- “Visit charge” of ₹250
- “Cleaning material charge” of ₹150
- “Outdoor cleaning extra” ₹200
- “Stabilizer testing” ₹100
By the end, your “free” service costs ₹700.
What to do: Before the technician arrives, get a written confirmation of what’s included and what’s extra. If extras appear during service, refuse them. Brand technicians will rarely insist if you’re firm.
Scam 5: The repeated “deep clean” upsell
Some service providers (particularly aggregator-based ones) train technicians to upsell deep clean every visit. After the basic service is “complete,” the technician will say “Sir, your unit really needs chemical wash, otherwise problems will come.”
What to do: Chemical wash is genuinely needed every 18–24 months, not every visit. If your AC is less than 18 months old or had a chemical wash in the last cycle, refuse politely. Most upsell scripts collapse with a firm “no thanks.”
Scam 6: Ghost technicians and fake invoices
This affects aggregator platforms more than brand authorized service. The technician comes, does 20 minutes of work, has you sign on his phone, and leaves. The app shows “service complete” with a generic checklist.
What to do: Always verify the technician’s ID. Always read the service report before signing. If you signed on a phone, screenshot the report. Genuine service providers welcome this scrutiny.
When to choose authorized brand service vs local technician
Authorized brand service (LG, Daikin, Voltas, etc.) makes sense when:
- Your AC is under warranty
- You suspect a major issue (cooling failure, electrical fault)
- Replacement parts may be needed
- Documentation is important (rental property, insurance claims)
Local technician makes sense when:
- Routine annual service of 3+ year old AC
- Simple cleaning and maintenance
- You have a trusted technician with track record
- Your AC is out of warranty and the issue is well-understood
The pricing difference (brand service often 30–50% more expensive) is justified for warranty work, where genuine parts and certified work matter. For routine cleaning, a good local technician at ₹500–700 is often equivalent in quality to a brand service at ₹1,000.
“The standard voltage for Indian residential supply is 230V single-phase, as specified by Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Real-world voltage often deviates significantly from this standard.”
Building a relationship with one good technician
The single best AC maintenance strategy in India is finding one honest local technician and using them for years. Here’s how to evaluate one:
Visit 1 (low stakes): Book them for basic service. Watch the work. Ask questions. See if they explain or get defensive.
Visit 2 (test): If something needs additional work, do they explain why with specifics? Or do they just say “needs to be done”?
Visit 3 (commitment): If both visits went well, ask for their direct number. Most reliable technicians appreciate repeat customers and offer slight discounts.
A good technician will tell you when you don’t need a service. They’ll defer chemical wash if the unit is fine. They’ll skip refrigerant top-up if pressure tests come back normal. They’ll save you money over years, which earns them your loyalty.
What good servicing actually achieves
Beyond avoiding scams, here’s what proper annual servicing should deliver:
- 8–15% lower electricity consumption vs unserviced units (clean coils transfer heat efficiently)
- Reduced compressor strain, extending unit life by 2–3 years
- Better cooling performance at the same temperature setting
- Eliminated bad smell that builds up in dirty drain trays
- Fewer sudden failures during peak summer when service availability is worst
Service costs over a 10-year AC life: roughly ₹8,000–12,000 in total. Savings from proper servicing over the same period: ₹15,000–25,000 in reduced electricity and avoided repairs.
It’s one of the few maintenance categories that genuinely pays for itself.
If you have a specific service quote you’re unsure about, share the details (price, what’s included, AC age) in the comments — I’ll help you evaluate whether it’s fair.
